The pass is the interface. Choose it like one.

Laminate, wristband, sticker, phone. The choice looks like procurement and behaves like user experience: it decides how fast a gate moves, how easy the pass is to pass on, and whether a found credential can be traced to anyone.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Event credentials come in four common forms: laminates on lanyards for working access, wristbands for continuous multi-day access, day stickers for short visits, and digital passes on a phone. Most events use several at once. The choice per group should be driven by how long the access lasts, how often it is checked, and how much it matters that it cannot be handed on.

Laminates

The default for working access. Readable at a distance, easy to colour code, easy to design zone rights onto, and easy to hand to a colleague at the fence, which is their main weakness. A laminate with a photograph is meaningfully harder to pass on; a laminate with a serial number is traceable after the fact, which is a different and also useful property.

They are also the credential most likely to be reprinted, because they carry the most information and the information changes. Reprint volume is a real cost line and a real deadline, and it is worth asking early who signs off a reprint at eleven at night.

Wristbands

The right answer for multi-day continuous access, especially where people sleep on site. A wristband that is fitted properly and cannot be removed without destroying it solves the handing-on problem that laminates have, which is why campsites and artist areas use them.

Fitting discipline is the whole game. A loose wristband is a transferable wristband, and every event has a story about a bag of them found in a hedge. Fit them yourself at the point of issue, and treat the stock like cash: signed for, counted, and reconciled at the end.

Day stickers and visitor passes

For short, escorted or single-day visits, a dated sticker is honest about what it is: a low-security, disposable credential whose main job is making it obvious at a glance that somebody has been through a process. Do not ask it to do more than that. Stickers with printed zone rights and no verification are theatre.

Digital passes

A pass on a phone is cheap to issue, instant to reissue and impossible to lose in the way a laminate is. It is also dependent on a phone that is charged, a screen that is readable in sunlight, and a person who can find the email. In practice digital works best as the layer that carries identity and validation, with a physical credential carrying the at-a-glance visual check.

The strongest argument for digital is change. When the matrix changes on the Thursday of build week, reissuing four hundred digital passes is a task. Reprinting four hundred laminates is a night shift.

QR codes and RFID

A QR code is a printed value that a camera reads. It costs almost nothing, works on paper, phones and laminates, and is trivially copied, which means the security lives in the system that validates it rather than in the code. That is fine, as long as validation is actually happening and duplicate use is detected.

RFID or NFC chips are read without line of sight, which makes them faster in a moving crowd and much better in rain and darkness. They cost more per credential and need readers. The honest rule of thumb: RFID earns its cost where throughput is the constraint, such as a gate taking thousands of people in an hour. For accreditation volumes, where the constraint is usually the decision rather than the read, QR plus a real validation step is normally the better value.

Serial ranges, and why they matter

A credential with no serial is anonymous stock. A found laminate is just a laminate, a box of five hundred that walked is untraceable, and the reconciliation at the end is a headcount rather than a record.

Assigning serial ranges to individuals or to allocations turns every physical credential into a record: this one belongs to this person, or was issued to that supplier, and here is who signed for it. It costs an hour of setup and it is the single cheapest control in the whole process.

What is the difference between a wristband and a laminate at an event?

A wristband is fitted to the person and destroyed on removal, so it suits continuous multi-day access and resists being handed on. A laminate hangs from a lanyard, carries more visible information and is easier to read at a distance, but it can be passed to someone else at the fence.

Are RFID wristbands worth it for accreditation?

Usually only where throughput is the constraint, such as high-volume public gates. RFID reads without line of sight, which is faster in crowds, rain and darkness, but costs more per credential and requires readers. Accreditation volumes are normally limited by the decision, not the read.

Can QR code passes be copied?

Yes. A QR code is just a printed value, so a photograph of one scans identically. The control is not the code but the system behind it: validating every scan against a live list and detecting the same credential being used twice in two places.

Do event passes need photographs?

For high-access credentials, yes. A photograph is the only part of a pass that ties it to a specific human at the moment it is checked, and it is what makes handing a laminate over at the fence stop working. For low-access day credentials it is rarely worth the production cost.
